The Gentleman's Calling Card
Does anyone carry a calling card? I carry them with me quite often. I keep some with me for various occasions. They are handy, for the obvious reasons, to pass somebody a note so they remember the interaction and who they were talking with. It's especially helpful in a loud club or bar and the bartender yells, "What's the name on the tab?" Not wanting to scream my name I just pass them a card.
Two movies show a great example of the gentleman's calling card.
DATING..OR FLIRTING
In the James Bond debut film Dr. No, in 1962, Bond is at a baccarat table, looks up, and says his name in the way that made him famous. Later, he and Sylvia Trench talk about "other activities" they might enjoy like golf, which is not what they are talking about, and he hands her a small white card. "My number's on the card." He does not recite the digits. He does not ask her to say hers back to him. He gives her a physical object and leaves the next move entirely with her.
BUSINESS
In Ocean's Eleven, Linus Caldwell is pickpocketing on a Chicago train. Daniel Ocean passes alongside him as they exit the platform. Linus reaches into his pocket and goes through his take. Somewhere in the pile is a card he did not lift. It says NICE PULL, EMMIT'S PUB, and on the back, DANIEL OCEAN (embossed, I might add). Danny Ocean has just recruited a man without speaking to him. The card did the talking, and it did it with a joke, which is the part people miss.
Both scenes work the same way. The card says less than a conversation would, and it lands harder.
WHAT IT WAS
The Victorians ran an entire social protocol on stiff paper. You left a card for each lady of the house. You folded a corner to say what the visit was for, upper right for a personal call, lower left for condolences, lower right if you were leaving town. There was a shorthand of French initials for the same job. The card went onto a tray at the door, and if yours came back to you in an envelope, you had been told, politely and without a word, not to come again.
A calling card tells your name and how to find you, and it does that in a form you can hand to a stranger at a wedding without either of you feeling like a transaction just occurred.
WHY NOW
Because the phone made the introduction worse, not better.
You know the ritual. You meet someone, the conversation is good, and then it stops dead while two adults stand in a room staring at their own screens. He spells his last name twice. You type it wrong anyway. One of you says "I'll find you on LinkedIn," which is the modern equivalent of returning the card in an envelope. Nobody finds anybody. The moment cools on the walk to the car.
A card ends that in two seconds. You hand it over, you say something short, and the conversation keeps going. That is the practical case and it is enough on its own.
PREPARATION
There is a second one. A card is a small piece of evidence that you thought about this before you left the house. Bond simply pulls the card from his pocket with his number already written on it. No need looking for a pen.
WHAT'S ON IT
Your name. I went the simple route and nothing else. Embossing is more expensive. Perhaps I don't want this person calling me so, here is my YouTube channel or here is my email.
It's not a business card so, no job title, no company, no logo, no QR code, no list of services. The moment you add what you sell, you have made a business card and the effect is gone. Leave the back blank on purpose, because the back is where you write the thing that makes it personal: the name of the bar, the time on Saturday, the book you promised to send. Ocean wrote a joke on his. That blank space is the feature.
Keep them flat in a small case rather than loose in a wallet. A soft, bent card with a curve in it says something you did not mean to say.
TRY IT
Print fifty. I came across a deal at Vista Print one time that I was able to make a box that will last me for a long time. They had a promo pack of 500 for a small amount but with limited fonts. So, I went generic.
A search on Etsy will find you more bespoke card makers.
If nothing comes of it, you are out the price of a decent lunch. If something does, you will have found out what Bond and Ocean already knew, which is that the most memorable thing you can do in a first conversation is leave part of it in the other person's pocket.
